Hello and welcome to the second issue of where I live, sorry its' been a long time coming, had a lot happening.

First of all we have had a couple of the Basketball games for the Commonwealth Games here in Ballarat. Don't worry if you do not know about them, only Commonwealth countries and territories compete and I don't suppose most countries outside the Commonwealth even hear about them.

Well it was a big deal for Ballarat, sort of a feather in the cap so to speak. The Basketball venue is right next door to where my grandson Joshua has his swimming lessons. We lost half the car park so that they could set up their security fences. I know that in todays world security at these events is of the highest priority, but it did seem a little over the top and out of place, when they had security guards there two weeks before the games where due to be played, anyway I suppose not having had direct contact with terrorist acts, it is easy to be a little complacent.

Sorry I could not provide you with a picture of the security as we were not allowed to take pictures. Any way we had a few overseas teams come to Ballarat to practice in the lead up to the Games. We are a very cosmopolitan community at the best of times, but we became even more so with the athletes and their team managers etc. Ballarat really got into the swing of things closing down a street and setting areas where people could keep up with what was happening and just get together and have some fun.

And here is where I must boast, our athletes did us proud not only by winning many events but just the fact that they made it at all. I know that I do not have the dedication that they do. I think that all the athlete from every country should get a medal just for their dedication. Anyway that just my thoughts on the matter.

The weather was unbelievable we had sunshine for the entire 11 days of the Games, which is something very unusual for this time of the year, everybody commented that the Gods were smiling on us. The strange thing about the weather was that the next day after the closing ceremony we had rain, spooky that.

We have had a very dry couple of years and things are looking pretty dry and lifeless, some are saying that it is the greenhouse effect, but if you look back at the records this has happened before, funny though some people just don't seem to be able to find these records and maintain the doom and gloom attitude. Don't get me wrong I think we need to do more to help our environment and I have been recycling and composting for years. We do need to look after our planet, but I feel that some go overboard at times.

O.K. I'll get down off my soapbox and get on with it.

Any of you that get the newsletter will know about the fires that we had here recently and that my son and his partners home was in grave danger (you can read about it in the Crystal Dragon Archives March Issue) Well everything turned out just fine.

I promised to put some pictures on this page for those of you who are interested. Also we have some video in MP3 format, so if you have Windows Media Player or something like it you will be able to see the fire and here the wind, give you an idea of just what it was like. Please note that my son Greg and his partner Olivia(Libby) who you will hear on the video are very laid back about these things, they take everything in their stride, they will never suffer from ulcers from worry.(Well maybe Libby is not so laid back) The noise that you hear is the wind which is being whipped up by the fire front.

Thant's all for now, I will try to keep this page a little more up to date in future,(although I can't promise anything)
